 A number of local telecommunications firms operate in the region, including Telesom, Nation Link , Somtel, SomCable

 

 

 

Telesom

Telesom was established in 2001It has since become the leading provider of telecommunications  services in the region. Telesom currently controls 90% of Somaliland's mobile subscribers, with the remaining 10% shared between the remaining operators. The firm provides a variety of mobile communication products and services including prepaid call plans, monthly subscription plans, international roaming, MMS, WAP (over both GSM and GPRS), residential fixed line services, broadband internet access as well as prepaid and postpaid 4G subscription services

Somcable

In 2010, SomeCable is Leader Company In the ISP, SomCable Ltd announced that it was contracted to pull submarine cable from Djibouti port to Berbera. SomCable declared it would invest $35 million USD to complete the project which employed more than 10,000 locals workers. Funding for the project came from local businessman Mohamed Said MSGThe project will ensure that high speed wireless technology capable of delivering sufficient scalable bandwidth to residents of Somaliland is available at the site. The initiative is completed in September 2014. Somaliland is currently the only Fiber operator in the country. As of October 2014, Somcable Launched the first LTE solution in Somaliland, the first GEPON/ FTTP solution in Somaliland.

 

Somtel

In 2008, Dahabshiil acquired a majority stake in Somtel, a Somaliland-based telecommunications firm specialising in high speed broadband, mobile Internet, and mobile phone services.[2][3] The acquisition provided Dahabshiil with the necessary platform for a subsequent expansion into mobile banking, a growth industry in the regional banking sector

As long I can remember, my cellphone has been the laughing stock of my friends. When everyone else had flip phones, mine still had an antenna and a bad tendency to pocket-dial people. While others got 3G and international roaming, I could never get bars inside my house. And in the last year, before I moved to Somaliland, my friends all converted to iPhones, Blackberrys, and Droids while I continued using the Motorola burner that my dad bought in 2005. I’ve always paid my own cellphone bills, and as a student on a budget, opted for low-end, pay-as-you-go monthly plans. Most of my phones never had T9, so my texting skills are infantile. I’ve become accustomed to having a phone that doesn’t work half of the time, charges me 25 cents per text received, and functions more as a pager. Just ask my friends…I usually get their calls on my mobile and then call them back from my house landline phone.
